The world issue of
Sea turtles are poached for their meat, their eggs, and their shells. Their meat and eggs are used as a delicacy in certain areas of the world. The trading of turtle eggs is used for trading and people make most of their income off of the poached turtles. Their shells are used in certain jewelry, instruments, or wall decor. They could also be used for ornamental purposes. On some islands sea turtles are used for ceremonial purposes. Some religions use the shells as ornaments to show the importance of their religion. In the Hindu religion one of their gods was reincarnated as "Kachhapa" which was a turtle, holding the weight of the world on its back. This makes the sea turtles important and protected among those religions. Turtles were originally consumed during religious holidays. They were also eaten as a delicacy called " turtle soup" in European countries. However, later they were proven to be endangered from these activities. This helped the people see that they were hurting their protected sea creatures. Most religions have now stopped with the consumption of turtles but there is still the threat of poachers. However, poachers are not the only threats to turtles. They also have natural habitat threats. Many predators try to steal the sea turtles eggs from their nests. When the sea turtles hatch out of their shells they need to make it to the water without predators attacking them. This is also a hard task because of the birds waiting along the shore to find food. All of these things are reasons that the sea turtles of today are endangered. http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/endangered_species/marine_turtles/asian_marine_turtles/background/
